Programmable Thermostats

Discover Simple Living

Why choose programmable thermostats?

We (my guy, my doggie and I) head to bed for the night. We all snuggle in and drift off to sleep. An hour later, I awake with a guy draped across my torso, a dog across my legs and it's approximately the same temperature as the surface of the sun. Dang it! I forgot to turn the thermostat down again!

Since my hysterectomy at 29, I cannot tolerate being hot at night. Once I'm awake, I'm up for the day, regardless of the position of the sun ... or moon. This has resulted in countless nights of just a couple of hours of sleep, which could have been avoided had I remembered to turn the thermostat down. Solution? A programmable thermostat. I set it to turn the temperature down around 10 degrees right as we are usually headed to bed. In order to keep himself happy as well, I set it to turn back up right before he usually gets out of bed. This makes for a big, happy family.

There are wi-fi, smart phone controlled thermostats available for around $100 that let you adjust the temperature at home while you're on the go. Ever head out for the afternoon and realize you left the furnace blasting hot air to an empty house? How many times have you had to stay late at work while your not-so-smart thermostat dutifully kicked the temperature up for your arrival ... which will now be delayed by several hours? Just as important to me, I can adjust the temperature right from bed. As long as my phone is within reach, I don't have to get up and can usually fall back asleep. Being able to sleep is worth the investment every single night. If you're going to replace a standard thermostat, definitely opt for a "smart" programmable thermostat. You can still set the standard schedule, but you'll be able to override the system on the go, saving you hundreds of dollars in heating and cooling costs each year.
